Pontinus castor là một loài cá biển thuộc chi Pontinus trong họ Cá mù làn. Loài này được mô tả lần đầu tiên vào năm 1860.
Từ nguyên
Từ định danh castor, cũng như pollux trong đồng nghĩa, được đặt theo tên của cặp song sinh Castor và Pollux, không rõ hàm ý.[2]
Phân bố và môi trường sống
P. castor có phân bố ở bờ Tây Đại Tây Dương, bao gồm Bermuda, dọc theo bờ đông Florida đến Bahamas, trong vịnh México gồm ngoài khơi Alabama và Florida Keys, cùng rạn san hô lớn phía tây Florida và phía tây bắc Cuba, ở vùng biển Caribe gồm Puerto Rico và quần đảo Virgin, và từ Aruba đến Grenada,[1] xa hơn phía nam đến bang Rio de Janeiro của Brasil.[3]
P. castor sống ở vùng nước tương đối sâu, trên nền đáy cứng, được tìm thấy ở độ sâu khoảng 45–400 m.[1]
Mô tả
Chiều dài lớn nhất được ghi nhận ở P. castor là 46 cm. Cá có màu đỏ lốm đốm vệt trắng, các vây nhiều đốm đỏ.[4]

Sinh thái
Thức ăn chủ yếu của P. castor là cua, các loài thân mềm và thủy sinh không xương sống khác.[1]
