Họ này nằm trong cận bộ Tabanomorpha. Atherix Meigen (và các chi liên quan) và Vermileo Macquart (và các chi liên quan) hiện được tách ra từ Rhagionidae thành họ Athericidae Stuckenberg 1973 and Vermileonidae Nagatomi 1977.
