Upeneichthys là một chi cá biển thuộc trong họ Cá phèn. Chi này được lập bởi Pieter Bleeker vào năm 1853.
Từ nguyên
Tên chi này được ghép từ Upeneus, một chi cá phèn khác, với ichthys, hàm ý đề cập đến sự tương tự về hình thái với Upeneus nhưng Upeneichthys không có răng trên vòm miệng.[3]

Theo Catalog of Fishes, hiện có 4 loài được công nhận trong chi này là:
- Upeneichthys lineatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801)
- Upeneichthys porosus (Cuvier, 1829)
- Upeneichthys stotti Hutchins, 1990[4]
- Upeneichthys vlamingii (Cuvier, 1829)
Phân loại
Ben-Tuvia (1986) xem U. porosus là đồng nghĩa với U. lineatus.[5] Hutchins (1990) mô tả U. stotti lần đầu tiên, nhưng xem U. porosus và U. vlamingii là một phân loài của U. lineatus.[4] Kim (2002) sau đó công nhận tất cả đều là những loài hợp lệ.[6]
Uiblein và cộng sự (2024) vẫn giữ nguyên tình trạng phân loài của U. lineatus porosus vì chưa có bằng chứng hỗ trợ cho việc nâng lên cấp loài.[7]
Phân bố
Ngoại trừ U. porosus là đặc hữu của New Zealand, các loài Upeneichthys còn lại là đặc hữu của Úc (không tìm thấy ở bờ bắc Úc).
