Chromebook adalah laptop atau komputer tablet yang menjalankan Linux berbasis ChromeOS sebagai sistem operasi. Chromebook terutama digunakan untuk melakukan berbagai tugas menggunakan browser Google Chrome, dengan sebagian besar aplikasi dan data berada di komputasi awan daripada di mesin itu sendiri. Semua Chromebook yang dirilis sejak akhir 2017 juga dapat menjalankan aplikasi Android. Beberapa Chromebook juga dapat menjalankan aplikasi Linux.[1]
Chromebook pertama yang dijual, oleh Acer Inc. dan Samsung, mulai dikirim pada 15 Juni 2011. Selain model laptop, versi desktop, yang disebut Chromebox, diperkenalkan pada Mei 2012, dan "all-in-one", yang disebut Chromebase, diperkenalkan pada Januari 2014 oleh LG Electronics.[2]
Pada bulan Oktober 2012, Simon Phipps, menulis di InfoWorld, dia berkata, "Chromebook mungkin adalah laptop Linux paling sukses yang pernah kami lihat hingga saat ini". Dari Januari hingga November 2013, 1,76 juta Chromebook terjual di saluran bisnis Amerika Serikat.[3]
Pada Maret 2018, Chromebook merupakan 60% dari komputer yang dibeli oleh sekolah di Amerika Serikat. Pada April 2017, Electronic Frontier Foundation menuduh Google menggunakan Chromebook untuk mengumpulkan dan mendata informasi pribadi anak-anak sekolah, termasuk pencarian Internet mereka, tanpa persetujuan orang tua mereka, dua tahun setelah EFF mengajukan keluhan federal terhadap perusahaan.[4]
