Desman adalah sebuah genus tikus tanah yang hanya mencakup satu spesies sintas, yaitu desman rusia (Desmana moschata). Sejumlah spesies fosil telah ditemukan di sekujur Eurasia.
Spesies tertuanya adalah Desmana marci dari Pliosen terawal di Spanyol.[2] Genus ini barangkali merupakan turunan dari tikus-tikus tanah yang lebih awal dari genus Archaeodesmana. D. marci barangkali mengarah ke kemunculan D. verestchagini, yang mengarah ke kehadiran spesies lebih muda seperti desman yang kini sintas.[3]
