Shonisaurus adalah sebuah genus ichthyosauria yang sangat besar. Setidaknya 37 spesimen fosil tak lengkap dari spesies tipenya, Shonisaurus popularis, telah ditemukan di Formasi Luning di Nevada, Amerika Serikat. Formasi ini berasal dari pembagian masa Carnian akhir sampai awal Norian pada periode Trias Akhir, sekitar 227 juta tahun lalu.[3] Kemungkinan spesies Shonisaurus lainnya telah ditemukan di deposit-deposit Norian tengah di Kanada dan Alaska.[2][4]
