Funkcija

Protein kodiran ovim genom član je natporodice transformirajući faktor rasta beta. Kao i drugi koštanomorfogenetski proteini (BMP) je poznat po svojoj sposobnosti da indukuje razvoj kostiju i hrskavice. To je disulfid-vezani homodimer. Negativno regulira gustinu kostiju. BMP3 je antagonist drugim BMP u diferencijaciji osteogenih progenitora. Jako je eksprimiran u slomljenim tkivima.

Kancer

BMP3 je hipermetiliran u mnogim slučajevima kolorektimskog karcinoma (CRC) i stoga se zajedno s drugim hipermetiliranim genima može koristiti kao biomarker za otkrivanje CRC u ranoj fazi.[6][7]
