The school is named for United States Marine CorpsFirst Lieutenant Matthew Ryan Vandegrift, who was killed in action in Basra, Iraq in 2008.[2] The school's first year of operation, 2009, was at adjacent Four Points Middle School, and it then transferred to the Vandegrift campus at the start of the 2010 school year.[3]
Academics
Vandegrift High School has "dual credit" with Austin Community College, which allows juniors and seniors to get college credit while still in high school.[4]
Vandegrift was ranked 54th in the state and 342nd nationally in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report rankings.[5]

Performing arts
Vandegrift has a competitive show choir, the all-female group "Venom".[8]
Vandegrift's marching band has over 400 members, and has won UIL State championships 2 years in a row. The marching band has also won the 2023 Bands of America Super regional in San Antonio in both the preliminary round and final round. With their finals performance, they achieved the highest BOA Regional score of all time, with a 97.6.[9]
Accomplishments
In November 2013, Vandegrift High School took first place at the UIL Class 4A State Marching Band Championships.[10]
The girls' soccer team won the 2014 UIL Class 4A championship.[11]
The boys' golf team won the 4A state championship in 2014.[12]
In 2019, the marching band won the Bands of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis for the first time.[13]
In 2022 and 2023, the marching band won the UIL Class 6A championship.[14]
In 2023 and 2024, the girls golf team won the UIL Class 6A State Championship.[15][16]
In 2024, the boys football team won the UIL Class 6A Division I Championship over Southlake Carroll.
