Pyrolobus arkeoen genero bat da, Crenarchaeota filumenean eta Pyrodictiaceae familian sailkatzen dena. Genero horren mikrobioen ezaugarririk nabarmenena da oso termofiloak direla, hots, tenperatura oso altuetan hazten direla, 100º C-en ingurukoa.
Pyrolobus fumarii da genero honen mikrobiorik termofiloena: 113º C-etan bizi daiteke, eta ez da hazten 90º C-tik behera (hortik behera, tenperaturak hotzegiak baitira!) [1]. 1997an aurkitu zuten zientzialariek mikrobio hau urpeko fumaroletan (bizia lehenbizikoz agertu zen tokietan), Atlantiko Ozeanoaren dortsaletan. Orokorrean, itsas ondoko eremu hidrotermaletan bizi dira Pyrolobus guztiak [2].
Kimiolitotrofoak dira, eta energia lortzen dute hidrogenoa oxidatzerakoan.
