മെക്സിക്കോ മെയിൻലാൻഡിൽനിന്നും ബജ കാലിഫോർണിയ ഉപദ്വീപിനെയും പസഫിക് സമുദ്രത്തെയും വേർതിരിക്കുന്ന മാർജിനൽ കടലാണ് ഗൾഫ് ഓഫ് കാലിഫോർണിയ. ഇതിന്റെ അതിരിലായി 4000 കിലോമീറ്റർ തീരപ്രദേശത്ത് ബജ കാലിഫോർണിയ, ബജ കാലിഫോർണിയ സർസൊനോറ, സിനലോയ എന്നീ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. സിനലോയ കൊളൊറാഡോ, ഫ്യൂയേർട്ട്, മായോ, സൊനോര, യാക്വി എന്നീ നദികൾ ഗൾഫ് ഓഫ് കാലിഫോർണിയയിലേയ്ക്ക് ഒഴുകിയെത്തുന്നു. 5,000 വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ കൂടുതൽ ചെറിയ നട്ടെല്ലില്ലാത്ത ജീവികളുടെ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയും ഇവിടെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ^[1]

ഗൾഫ് ഓഫ് കാലിഫോർണിയ 1,126 കിലോമീറ്റർ (700 മൈൽ) നീളവും 48–241 കിലോമീറ്റർ (30–150 മൈൽ) വിസ്താരവും,177,000 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ (68,000 ചതുരശ്ര മൈൽ)വിസ്തീർണ്ണവും, 818.08 കിലോമീറ്റർ (2,684.0 അടി) ആഴവും, 145,000 km3 (35,000 cu mi) വ്യാപ്തവും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.

ഗൾഫ് ഓഫ് കാലിഫോർണിയയിലെ മഞ്ഞുകാലത്തെ താപനില 16 °C (61 °F) വേനൽക്കാലത്തെ താപനില 24 °C (75 °F) ആണ്. ആഗസ്റ്റിൽ ലാ പസിലുള്ള താപനില 30 °C (86 °F) എത്തുമ്പോൾ കാബോ സാൻ ലൂകസിലെ താപനില 26 °C (79 °F) ആണ്.^[2][3][4][5]
