王赓武，CBE（英語：Wang Gungwu，1930年10月9日—），出身馬來西亞和新加坡的历史学家^[4][5][6]，海外华人史的主要开拓者，^[7][8]亦研究現代中國的國族史觀。香港大學校長（1986-1995）、澳洲國立大學遠東歷史系教授兼系主任（1968-1986）、馬來亞大學吉隆坡分校歷史系教授兼系主任（1963-1968）。受王賡武指導的博士生計有James K. Chin（英语：James K. Chin）、Antonia Finnane（英语：Antonia Finnane）、John Fitzgerald（英语：John Fitzgerald）、黃堅立（英语：Huang Jianli）、李元瑾（英语：Lee Guan Kin）、吳振強（英语：Ng Chin-Keong）以及蘇基朗。

王赓武父親王宓文1903年生於大清江蘇泰州，南京國立東南大學英國文學系畢業後，1929年獲聘為荷属东印度（今印尼）泗水市第一家華文中學的校長。^[9]王赓武1930年生于泗水，因父親有新的教職，舉家旋即迁至英属马来亚怡保。王赓武回憶，怡保人口主要是曼泰宁人、客家人、廣府人、四邑人和閩南人，而王氏一家來自江苏蘇北，操一口泰州腔的中華民國國語，在當地人眼中頗為異類。^[9]

1936年入讀怡保Maxwell Primary School^[10]，1年後隨著該校跟另一所官立英文小學Anderson School 合併而一同過渡^[10]，在Anderson School修畢小二至小五課程^[10]。1941年12月太平洋戰爭馬來亞戰役^[10]，未幾王賡武轉學至 Ming Teh Primary School（明德小學）^[10]。小六畢業後由父親給予的初中教育^[10]，1945年才重返 Anderson School 入讀中三年級^[10]。及後，他於1946年報考英國劍橋中學文憑公開試（即普通教育文憑前身）^[10]，1947年入讀中華民國南京國立中央大學歷史系^[1]，1949年因国共内战國民政府失利而转入馬來亞大學新加坡分校，畢業論文《Chinese Reformists and Revolutionaries in the Straits Settlements, 1900-1911》。1953年本科畢業後繼續在馬來亞大學攻讀碩士^[1]，論文“The Nanhai Trade : a Study of the Early History of Chinese Trade in the South China Sea”^[11][2]。1957年获英国伦敦大学亞非學院博士学位^[1]，论文为“The Structure of Power in North Chinese During the Five Dynasty”。1957年起先后任马来亚大学历史系讲师，1963年任教授兼系主任、文学院院长。1968年移民澳大利亞，任澳洲國立大學远东历史系主任与太平洋研究院院长。1986年至1996年任香港大学校长。1996年起任新加坡国立大学东亚研究所所长，曾獲福岡亞洲文化獎─學術研究獎（學術部門）^[1]。

所有資料都表明王赓武至少有兩個國籍，但一般只指明其中一個是澳大利亞籍，另一籍則不得而知。“我在澳大利亚生活了18年，对那个国家很有感情。但我不认为自己是澳大利亚人，不管是我对他们的认识还是他们对我的认识都还很肤浅。”^[2]1957年马来亚联合邦独立，马来亚联合邦华人面临回籍中华民国、中华人民共和国还是留下入籍的选择。王赓武的研究興趣由此擴展到东南亚各地、美国、澳大利亚、非洲华人的历史^[11]。

王赓武認為中國天下观念更有包容性，中国版图的问题、主权的问题非常复杂，為避免狭隘民族的概念及政策的問題，主張古代中国向来有的天下观，與民族国家的概念是矛盾的，但可以和理想的国家之间互相照顾、互相支持秩序結合^[11]。澳大利亚首任驻中華人民共和國大使费思棻（英语：Stephen FitzGerald (diplomat)）曾半开玩笑地说，王赓武可以当好中国总理，他也是马来西亚民政党创办人之一^[11]。

王赓武在中国海洋观^[12]及中國海洋發展史^[13]等課題提出的相關學術論文及專書。學者鄭永年認為王赓武仍是啟發學者的典範，因為其研究想像力正是連結中國研究及國際關係學研究所需，特別在處理國際關係學理論中的跨國性而言。^[14]

王赓武在近代海洋中國的發展和國族主義的研究包含開放性及革命的關係^[15]及海洋中國的諸多歷史變化^[16]

以此歷史觀，王赓武對鄧小平改革開放政策所獲得的經濟成果有以下描述：^[17]

沿海省分在靈敏地回應對香港台灣企業家提供的刺激後，經歷了幾乎令人難以置信的成功經歷……甚至在對「大中華地區」的觀感日漸發展上，有一個中國國協的心理投射……雖說這個區域性的中國國協是用經濟的方式形成，它展現了是南方及沿海中國人的企圖心，一種一直面向大海及大洋求生計及繁景的國族情感。

同時他認為還有一種在地理、職業及文化個性上不同的國族情緒：

然而也有另外一種中國，一個內陸鄉村的中國。這個中國的文化遺產和精神狀態可以從傳統官員及文人的價值觀找到，現則是普遍地通過農民對社會文化價值變遷的懷疑中表達出來。對這沉默的大多數人來說，過去十年經濟奇蹟仍是遙遠的，若還不到遙不可及的程度的話。經濟發展在他們眼中，被認為是由海外外部力量所產生的，而其帶來的好處，也只有在沿海地區和少數幾個大城市才看的到。一直與他們相伴的是，發達區域與內陸區域間生活水平的尖銳反差，還有，各種道德敗壞的刺耳故事。如果精神腹地的國族主義訴求的被激起的話，與沿海發達省分不同的是，他們會訴諸相當不同的記憶和本能。

他進一步指出，在中國近現代史上這兩種國族情緒的差異，鼓勵另外一種型態的復興民族主義來恢復中國一貫奉行的大陸的世界觀：

國家需要拯救，要回歸到有更好的計劃及及對那些不道德及邪惡的人給與更緊更強的控制。這包括糾正內陸及沿海地區間日益不平衡的發展上。無論在時間及空間上，這復興民族主義更為深遠的具體表現，就是要恢復中國一貫奉行的大陸的世界觀。根據這大陸世界觀，海洋利益已經過於狹窄和僅為自我服務，從這些擁有大陸世界觀人的眼光來看，中國沿海在整個歷史的行為證明了這一點。位於中央內陸的官員及士兵長久以來懷疑在周邊地區熱情商人的忠誠度。近代中國史上，農民革命家戰勝沿海國族主義者的領導，點出一個既定模式；而文化大革命的許多特徵文革也指向同一種模式。有一股內在力量推往拉大陸中國的歷史位置，恢復其優勢，那種可以超越較富有且有可疑算盤的海洋中國的優勢，而這心態認知的海洋中國，包含了香港與台灣，他們代表的正是財富的極至化身…… 更重要的是中國最近內部的發展。經濟改革愈成功，就更威脅到現行的政治制度。鄧小平的大膽的改革已挑戰共產黨，使其之排除僵化和無效率，使其從“死亡之手”的中央計劃經濟走向以“有形之手”和“無形之手”的新組合治理。放鬆管制已經釋放出比預期中更大的能量。經濟增長一直都不是均衡的，受惠的沿海地區的發展速度，遠遠超過相對受到忽視的內陸。政府的許多部門也未能與時並進。這情況讓積極進取和大膽的人受惠，但不幸的，受惠的也包括貪婪和腐敗的人。因此，大多數百姓的情緒是需要更一個強有力的方向感，需要更多對經濟成長的制衡監督，甚至懷念起當所有事情是比較可預測的，更踏實的往日時光。

曾任澳洲人文科學院院长、亚洲历史学家国际协会主席、澳中理事会主席、香港演艺发展局主席等职。并任新加坡国立大学东亚研究所所长、《南洋学报》主编多年。1994年荣获日本国福冈亚洲文化奖。1992年成為台灣中央研究院院士。現2007年成為新加坡國立大學有史以來第三位尊稱「校级教授」（University Professor）的學者。^[18]2020年榮獲唐獎漢學奬。
